10 Easy Deck Staining Tips

10 Easy Tips to help you Stain Your Wood Deck

1. Make sure to understand the difference in the types of Deck Stains. There are Transparent, Semi-Transparent, Semi-Solid and, Solid Deck Stains.

2. Choose a stain that penetrates deep into the wood. The better it penetrates the better it will work perform when it comes to wear and tear.

3. Start with the verticals and finish with the horizontal surfaces. It is easiest to apply to all of your railings and privacy walls first. The flooring and steps should be done last. Try not to step in your last coat as well.

4. It is best to apply the deck stain with the grain of the wood from end to end of each deck board. Do not stop halfway and let dry. This can cause overlapping.

5. Make sure to protect surrounding areas using tarps or plastic. You should cover plants, trees, concrete, bricks, windows, siding, rocks. It is very difficult to remove the stain if you do not.

6. The use of old clothing and gloves are needed for protection. In addition if you spray the deck stain it would be advisable to wear a respirator.

7. Apply the deck stain evenly and make sure to wipe any puddles of stain that have not penetrated into the wood after an hour. Take extra care to wipe excess stain that accumulates under railings.

8. Make sure that your deck is dry enough for the stain. Best way to check is drip some water onto the deck. If it absorbs immediately then it is okay to apply the stain. If it 'beads" water then it most likely will not let your stain penetrate properly. In addition make sure the rain is not fore casted in the near future.

9. The use of a exterior stain pad is the best tool when applying. This will help substanially with uniformity. When applying with a stain pad you can "push" the deck stain deeper into the wood as well.

10. Follow the manufacturers directions! Their directions are there for a reason!

I am also told by the Carpenter to start with verticals as the spill over can
easily be washed and then proceeding with horizontal surfaces will make all that
good. Covering of the place before the work starts to stay from the stain was
very tedious and of course, it's in the interest of other articles. All great
suggestions and thanks.

Are respirators mandatory during the application? Any other method may be
recommended that prevents the inhalation.

Respirators are suggested to minimize inhalation into your system especially
during spraying. Not everyone does this though.

I always thought that deck stains are just transparent. Whoever thought that it
has some types as well. Which of the deck stain types penetrates better?

DeckRestAdmin |Y-m-d H:i:s
The more transparent it is the better it will penetrate into to the wood.
Basically a transparent wood stain will contain the least amount of pigment
which means it penetrates better. Likewise a solid stain contains the most
pigment with the worst penetration.

How to remove the extra stain done under the railings? The process would be a
difficult one if we do not act quickly before hand.

It is best to back wipe the excess stain before it dries with a stain pad or
rags. This will help to ensure an even application on the flooring. :cheer:

Great tips to follow on applying stain to the wood deck. Regarding with the
inhalers, I am aware that I was once associated with DSA of MNC who use store
car paints. There no one is allowed enter the paint storage facility without
face mask as many of the paints are hazardous. All paint odours are hazardous
and no difference with stain too. It's in our own interest.

Using a wood stain outdoors is not nearly as dangerous as an indoor car paint.

Big difference.

Sir, you wrote in the last paragraph that that the directions forwarded by the
manufacturer should be followed. Do you mean to say that each manufacturer will
have his own directions?
DeckRestAdmin |Y-m-d H:i:s
Yes, all products have different parameters on application, coverage, and
temperature in which to apply. Following the manufacturer's directions is
important.
