10 Easy Deck Staining Tips

10 Easy Tips to help you Stain Your Wood Deck
1. Make sure to understand the difference in the types of Deck Stains. There are Transparent, Semi-Transparent, Semi-Solid and, Solid Deck Stains.
2. Choose a stain that penetrates deep into the wood. The better it penetrates the better it will work perform when it comes to wear and tear.
3. Start with the verticals and finish with the horizontal surfaces. It is easiest to apply to all of your railings and privacy walls first. The flooring and steps should be done last. Try not to step in your last coat as well.
4. It is best to apply the deck stain with the grain of the wood from end to end of each deck board. Do not stop halfway and let dry. This can cause overlapping.
5. Make sure to protect surrounding areas using tarps or plastic. You should cover plants, trees, concrete, bricks, windows, siding, rocks. It is very difficult to remove the stain if you do not.
6. The use of old clothing and gloves are needed for protection. In addition if you spray the deck stain it would be advisable to wear a respirator.
7. Apply the deck stain evenly and make sure to wipe any puddles of stain that have not penetrated into the wood after an hour. Take extra care to wipe excess stain that accumulates under railings.
8. Make sure that your deck is dry enough for the stain. Best way to check is drip some water onto the deck. If it absorbs immediately then it is okay to apply the stain. If it 'beads" water then it most likely will not let your stain penetrate properly. In addition make sure the rain is not fore casted in the near future.
9. The use of a exterior stain pad is the best tool when applying. This will help substanially with uniformity. When applying with a stain pad you can "push" the deck stain deeper into the wood as well.
