ipeTips for Staining IPE Wood

IPE exotic hardwood is from the Brazilian Ironwood family and has become in recent years a favorite for residential decks. Event though it is naturally resistant to rot and decay, IPE needs to be stained on an annual basis if you want to retain the rich color tones of the wood. If left neglected the IPE will gray within months.

IPE when stained is one of the most beautiful looking woods. The tints in the stain will enhance the IPE as if wet with water. One of the only negatives with IPE is that it typically needs to be stained every 9-18 months depending on the exposure to the UV. This is not the fault of the wood stains but is due to the very high density of the IPE. In other words the wood stain will have difficulty penetrating into the wood. It is best to choose a wood stain that is able to penetrate the IPE and can be cleaned and re coated easily when needed.

  1. Please read IPE Cleaning Tips - Step 1 first before applying a wood stain.
  2. Choose a wood stain that is designed to penetrate IPE: IPE Hardwood Stains. Natural colors will enhance the IPE similar to as if wet with water. Using a tint that has a little more "red" will offer better UV protection. Armstrong Clark in Mahogany Color
  3. Coverage per gallon on IPE is usually on the higher side. Typically one gallon can cover 200-300 square feet. One coat typically is all you will need.
  4. Apply hardwood decking stain to railings first. This can be done with a brush or stain pad applicator. We prefer the latter. Make sure to tarps any bushes if needed. Wipe up any excess drips that "puddle" on flooring.
  5. Apply stain to horizontal floor only using a stain pad applicator. This will allow you to "push" the stain into the wood. Back yourself off deck trying not to step into the stain.
  6. After completed wait 30-45 minutes and wipe and excess stain off the deck with rags. *If using a oil based stain, do not leave rags inside house or garage! If a hot sunny day they could accidentally catch fire.
  7. Let dry for 24 hours or completely dry prior to replacing furniture.

You are now done! Staining IPE is a fairly easy process and should be done once or twice a year to preserve color.
