Paver Sealer turned white after rain 2 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 11
You are now in a live chat session with Mike Barry...

The Sealer Store (19:22:31):
Hello, How may I help you?

Mike Barry (19:24:53): I have a died and stamped concrete driveway and patio around 12,000 sq ft. It is 4 years old and was originally sealed with Brickform lacquer based gen seal. It was resealed this spring with 2 additional coats. Now that the rains have come it looks like it is calcifying with big white wrings of a chalky like substance every where
The Sealer Store (19:26:06): It is probably not calcium deposits. Did it turn white prior to the last two coats?
Mike Barry (19:26:31): no..it was just a little dull
The Sealer Store (19:27:00): Does it only turn white when it rains? Does it go away after drying?
Mike Barry (19:28:02): It didn't really show up until the rains but it does not go away. If you rub it with your finger it is like a chalk, like you get with old stucco
The Sealer Store (19:29:22): It might water mineral deposits drying on the surface.
The Sealer Store (19:30:15): Since it is on top of the sealer then it is not a sealer issue.
The Sealer Store (19:30:51): Does it wash off with a pressure washer?
Mike Barry (19:32:26): I don't know that I would just characterize it as being on top. I thought it might be moisture trapped between the original and reapplication and thus not bonded and that somehow we need to get the application stripped off.
The Sealer Store (19:34:47): If it is moisture trapped then it would not rub off. Have you tried applying a solvent to reset the shine? you can do that with this product: Aromatic Solvent
The Sealer Store (19:35:58): Stripping is not easy but can be done if needed: Paver Sealer Stripper
Mike Barry (19:36:55): thanks but I need something for a lacquer based sealer
The Sealer Store (19:37:58): It will work on lacquer as well. You can also use lacquer thinner.
Mike Barry (19:38:09): thank you

Make sure to cover anything of interest or value with plastic before you begin, the sealer reactivates when the stripper is applied and flies when powerwashing in about a 12-15 ft. radius, then resolidifies where it lands. I found out the hard way long ago on a brand new front door.

One has to wait for at least 24 hours after rain before applying the paver sealer. I learned the hard way. I tried the Aromatic Solvent, it removed the moisture that gets sealed in.

I am glad it worked for you. In general 24 hours is more then enough. If it lightly rained then 12 hours may be okay as well.

I put these piece of information related to coverage rates of paver sealer for our members who would like to use it for the pavement.

The normal trade practice of coverage is

ESTIMATOR'S DATA: 100-150 sq. ft. per gallon for 1st coat.
PROTECTING & SEALING: 100-150 sq. ft. per gallon for 2nd coat. (Not always needed)

The second coat is supposed to be applied after 4-24 hours.

Preparation & Sealing: All pavers must be; clean, dry, and free of all coatings, oils,
efflorescence, and loose material. Apply first application of PAVER SEALER at the rate of 100-150 sq. ft. per gallon.

Allow first coat to dry, then apply
second coat of PAVER SEALER at the rate of 100-150 sq. ft.

PAVER SEALER must be applied as received and should not be diluted or thinned.

Use only clean spray equipment, brushes and rollers to apply
PAVER SEALER.

Thanks for the info, take in consideration that there are many different brands of paver sealers. Some are solvent based and some are water based. some require 1 coat, some 2 coats.

Make sure that whatever brand of sealer that you choose to use that you follow the manufacturers directions. The key is to not over apply or under apply.
