TOPIC: Defy Stain for a Marine Dock
#1788
Defy Stain for a Marine Dock 1 Year ago Karma: 0
Looking for best sealer for floating boat dock on fresh water lake in SC. This deck is approx 13 years old. I have owned for 3 years. I think the original owner sealed it with hydraulic or motor oil, based on the black powdery residue it had.

I recently scrubbed it with nothing more than water and a stiff brush and the surface now looks almost new.

What would you recommend for sealing the deck now - the Defy marine stain or the synthetic epoxy resin stain?

I would go with the Defy Marine Seal. This product was specifically designed for your scenario.

The back residue may have been mold/mildew. I would suggest cleaning again with the Defy Marine Wood cleaner to prep the wood properly.

I have a dock on Lake Hartwell, GA side, and have had problems with my wood dock for 16 yrs. I have constantly sealed, replaced lumber of top level but nothing lasts longer than a year. I have used a variety of products, i.e. TWP, Behr, etc.
I have seen ads on Defy Products and wondered if they would work better. I replaced the top decking 3 yrs ago, and have used Olympic Stain 2 times. How do I prepare this decking for the Defy Stain? and does it work?
Thanks for any advice.....

Behr and Olympic are poor to average products at best. TWP is one of our top selling products and in most cases will last 2 years on a horizontal surface. Defy typically lasts about the same as the TWP (2 years). The newer Defy Extreme has shown even better results.

For maximum UV protection make sure to use a stain that is tinted. The tint acts as a UV blocker, prolonging the graying of the wood. Make sure that all previous coatings are removed prior to using a different brand of stain.

Would the Marine wood seal be appropriate for our cedar deck? We had cleaned it last fall. The deck is about 750 square feet. Otherwise we are considering the UV Clear or the stain. We would like a non-painted look. I assume the stain is a semi-transparent color.

Our home is mahogany and cedar. We have cedar decking overhangs that we have previously used a product called Penofin. We are not happy with how it appears to have mold. We need a clean seal for the overhangs. Do you have a recommendation for this? We can shoot you a photo.

Thanks!

You best bet would be the Defy Stain for Hardwoods. This product works great on cedar wood.
