Defy stain for mahogany 2 Years, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
I have a small area of mahogany decking on the front stoop of my house and thought the Hardwood stain would be the best choice. Would the Cedar tone be the right shade?

Also, could you tell me how long it would take to receive a gallon of this product? I would like it asap. I tried to get the product at a store in Massachusetts, but they didn't have it. Is there anywhere it New Hampshire that sells this or is my best bet to just order online?

Thank you.

Yes the Defy Hardwood would be the best choice. The Cedartone color would be a good choice. Shipping to your area takes 3-4 business days.

Hello,

1.Could you tell me if Deck Stain for Hardwoods is a semi-transparent or works like one?

2.Also, I used a deck cleaner on bare wood and thought I would be ready to stain, but the label on the can state a wood brightener needs to be used. Is this just for wood that is already stained? I really don't want to have another step in this process. I live in New Hampshire and I'm running out of time to get this job done as I have a limited # of warm days this week.

3.Also, Can you tell me how long this stain will last? I noticed at Lowes and Home Depot on the stains they carry they guarantee their stains will last anywhere from 3-5 years.

4. The instructions on the can state when applying a second coat not to let the 1st coat dry. How do I do this? Do one plank and then just go over it immediately after the 1st coat has been applied?

5. I will be applying this product to mahogony decking, but I also have just pressure treated wood. Can this product be used on this as well?

6. After cleaning with the deck cleaner some of the wood is a little fuzzy. Do I have to sand or will this disappear with time?

Thank you.

1. Semi-Transparent
2. No you need a wood brightener to neutralize the cleaner and brighten the wood. It does not brighten stain.
3. 2-4 years on verticals and 2 years on horizontals for softwoods. Home Depot and Lowes warranties are limited and their stains will not last 3-5 years. Nothing lasts 3-5 years on a horizontal
4. Walking on the first coat will not hurt the stain if it is not completely dry. Just make sure that you do not step in your second coat. Do the entire floor then repeat.
5. Yes it can be used for all types of wood. FYI, no stain on the market will last more then 1-2 seasons on hardwoods such as mahogany. This is not the stains fault but the extreme density of your wood. Make sure not to over apply as thicker is not better! I would apply two light coats to your type of wood.
6. Do not sand. The fuzzing would have been minimized if the brightener was used immediately after using the cleaner. It should not be as noticeable once the stain is applied.

Does the Defy Extreme clear work on mahogany decks? Or do I need to use your Hardwood stain?

Yes you can use the Defy Extreme Stain line on your mahogany deck. It would be best to pick a tint though as it will last substantially longer then the clear. The Light Walnut is the most popular tint for mahogany.
