Cabot Semi-Solid 3 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 0
Last year we used Cabot semi solid decking stain in the color New Cedar after reading the Consumer Reports information. By spring half of it is severely faded showing the old deck color through. It seems it is the side further away from the house that is more in the sun and snow in the sun.

In preparation we power washed, used a wood brightner, sanded with a hand sander, and then power washed again to get all the particulate off. We applied in April in low sun weather after letting it dry for for a few days. The deck was 2 years old on a new construction home at the time of application.

It looks 'half bad'. The vertical surfaces look fine, and we are not planning on changing them due to the work.

How do we get this off before we reapply the new product? What product do you reccomend to fix this?

Thanks.

You should use a deck stripper to remove as much as possible from the horizontals before re applying. Were you going to use the same stain or a different one?

What would be your recommendation on a new stain? I don't see the same working any better. What about TWP?

TWP is a great product and will work well. Make sure a strip as much as possible of the flooring. TWP is a penetrating stain and works best when the wood is free of other materials.

Will that help with all the scuff through spots if it is a penetrating stain? Any othe product recommendations for my full sun, crazy weather exposure? What kind of stripper agent works best to get this off? I have never used one.

What do you men by "scuff through spots"?

Was the Cabot a penetrating or a film-forming stain? The type and difficulty of stripping is dependent on this.

On the stair edges is where we walked and other areas it seemed to scuff off to the gray wood due ato foot traffic. I believe it seemed to form just a film over the surface. Perhaps, a photo or two when there is daylight would be very helpful to show you the appearance of my deck. Tomorrow I will forward, and perhaps that will give you a better understanding of what I mean. Thank you for all your time and help so far. We can use it.

I would LOVE a product that allows me to recoat to sharpen it up each year instead of having to strip and recoat. Does that exist? The Cabots semi solid decking stain cannot do that.

TheSealerStore Timberoil is exactly what you would want. It is extremely penetrating and very rarely wears off since it dives very deep into the wood. To maintain you would just lightly clean and recoat. It is also the easiest stain to apply.
