Need help deciding which product to use PT deck 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi
I am trying to decide which product to use on my older pressure treated deck. We had used Sikkens on it before. Had problems with it peeling after three applications over 5 or 6 years. So, two years ago we tried to remove it by power washing it away...that was a mistake! Then tried sanding it down for a smooth surface, but still have bumps and grooves in wood. We did seal it last year with a semi-transparent stain from Benjamin Moore. Last weekend we cleaned the deck with Clorox for decks. Now, the question is what product is going to condition and revive the wood boards.

Here was my first choice Defy Epoxy Fortified wood stain or Defy UV clear. My thought was the epoxy synthetic resins would hold up longer. The question was…is one better than the other.

Then after doing a lot of research I came up with all of these products so now I am very confused as to which one is what I am looking for. They all seem to do a little something different. Any help or advice would be great appreciated.

Here is my list:

Superdeck brand products -
•1900 Transparent stain & sealer - highest quality transparent oxide pigments & UV protection
•2000 Series for pressure treated wood - three-oil finish includes linseed and tung oils, highest-quality transparent oxide pigments,
•2100-2300 semi-transparent – has carnauba, linseed and tung oil
•2600 DFS stain and sealer - uses an advanced waterborne alkyd dispersion technology which facilitates the deepest penetration into wood surfaces,

Cabot –
•Cabot 1400 stain - alkyd-resin base for extreme scuff resistance, Semi Opaque Stain
•SPF 24 Deck and fence finish - Hydrophilic, water-based resin system uses the wood's surface moisture to penetrate, so application can be done after washing or rain. SPF 24 provides up to 24 months of protection.
•Clear stains - unique blend of resin and oil for premium translucent finish.
•Australian – Timber Oil - Linseed, Tung, and alkyds mixed with trans-oxide pigments make this the most impervious coating against UV damage

TWP
•TWP 100 – not VOC compliant - unique combination of chemicals in a professional strength formula, protects against UV Discoloration, Water, Rot and Decay
•TWP 500 - is VOC compliant – prevents water absorption that causes warping, cracking, and splitting. Prevents freeze damage in colder climates, Special U.V. absorbers, Prevents Wood Rot
•TWP 200 – is VOC compliant - high solids, penetrating finish

Penofin –
•Blue label – transparent finish w/ UV protection - Brazilian Rosewood Oil penetrates deeply to protect against moisture, Transoxide pigments virtually eliminate the fading due to sunlight
•Red Label –transparent finish - not VOC compliant - 99% ultraviolet protection via transoxide pigments, Added high-grade mildewcide, never any sanding or stripping required!
•Marine Oil – would this hold up better - 99% ultraviolet protection, Added high-grade mildewcide for marine conditions

Armstong Clark – states it rejuvenates the wood - Non-drying oils penetrate deep to recondition older wood, Drying oils, pigments and water repellents protect against water and UV damage and lock in the nondrying oils.
•Transparent
•Semi-transparent
•Semi - solid

The Sealer Store – Ideal for semi annual maintenance coats. Does this mean it doesn’t hold up or doesn’t build up??
•Timber Oil – paraiffinic based product, extremely high pigment content, loaded down w/antifungal agents, rich oils dive deep into wood.

Messmer’s –
•Caribbean Extreme teak oil finish - Iron Oxide pigments, three UV absorbers and stabilizers, modified Tung and Phenolic resins

Now, that I have given you a mouth full. How do you decipher which product will do the job you are looking for.
Thanks,
Susan
