Having been on this forum I have been thinking about maybe extending or even renewing some of my decking, and it led me to the question if I did, how often should I use a suupport post in the ground, is there a rule of thumb regarding this?

Almost all decking is posted into the ground when built. Regulations vary across the country. Check with your local buliding department. They will be able to provide you with the required codes.

This is a very good question. I too was wondering about this. I have measured the distance between posts on the longest area of my current deck and will do the add on based on that information. I also have not been able to find out who to actually talk to about it, unless I check with a local home builder or store. My city building people do not use permits for decks so they did not have an answer.

Building codes should be available at your local building department for all exterior structures. If they do not require a permit they should still have the proper information.
