Remove Varnish 4 Years ago Karma: 0
Hi Everyone

I have recently moved to a new adress and have alot of outside decking and patio areas, my question is this, At the back i have steps going down into the main year, The steps i think are cedar, they have been varnished, how do I go about removing the varnish?

Film-forming products such as lacquers and varnishes are not removable with a wood or deck stripper. You will have to use a sanding machine in order to remove the varnish. Is it peeling? Most varnishes will peel on horizontal exterior wood. Once yoy get it off you would need to use a penetrating deck stain.

It is in certain spots, sanding is going to be a major job I think - do you think its a home job or should I look to get a contractor in?

A contractor may be needed since it will be very hard. You might want to open a thread in the Hire A Contractor section. Hopefully you will find a local contractor to help!

Thanks for that, I will do as you have recommended, I hope if I find one its not too costly as I'm not the richest in the world and tradesmen are not cheap

Great information there. I was wondering the same thing but had heard that I would likely have to use a sander on it. Although some spots are tough places to reach I have been told that you can use a heavy sand paper and a hand sander but it will take a bit more time.

Is this right information.

You would only need to sand if you have a varnish type coating and that is extremely rare for a wood deck. Most likely you would need a deck stripper to remove the previous coating. This would be alot easier and less aggressive then sanding.

I thought my old decking was varnished, but I guess its not after reading this thread, Once applied do you remove with wire wool or something?
