Stripping a painted deck- need help 3 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 0
Let me start out by saying that I didnt paint it! I rent a home, and my landlord hired someone to build a deck a couple years ago. Apparently when the guy built it he did not apply any sealer, stain, or protectant of any kind. Instead he painted it to match the house. I live in souther california, and while we dont get too much rain, the deck gets constant sunlight. It has peeled, and a lot of it has turned gray. I have decided to fix it myself. I just dont know which stripper to use!!! I've had the owners credit card for a month, but just dunno where to start. Any suggestions on a good proven stripper. I understand its not gonna get all of it off, and that it will take some elbow grease. I just wanna get going before its 110 everyday! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stripping a painted deck is never easy and there isn't a deck stripper that is going to remove it with ease. I would suggest the HD80 to strip off as much as possible followed by sanding where needed. You may end up getting all off the flooring but have a hard time with the ralings. You could end up going with a paint on the ralings and transparent on the flooring. A two-toned deck does look nice and your maintenance would be minimal this way.

Thank you! And I had pretty much figured I would have to do a lot of sanding. Since it wasnt sealed most of the paint has peeled off the floor already, but the rails, and sides didnt so I knew those parts were gonna be a problem. Do you know if they sell the HD80 to people? I saw it on another site but it said they only sell it to contractors.. From what I've read its the only one that has a shot of helping take the paint off but I dunno if I can buy it myself. Everyone here works in construction so I could have someone get it for me, but I dont want to unless I have to.

HD80 is not typically sold to homeowners due to the potency of the product. It is discouraged but the site actually will not stop you from buying the item. It comes in a powder form and extreme caution must be used will mixing. Protective gloves and eyewear is a must!
