My friend is unsure of the type of wood that the deck is made of, and I would like to ask anyone here if you can tell me if there are certain types of stains that are only good with certain types of wood. What we really need is a stain that is good with all types of wood since we are unsure of the wood used.

Any high quality oil based deck sealer would work well on both cedar and treated decks, if it is a hardwood (probably not due to the extreme expense), messmers and penofin both make decent products specifically for dense hardwoods.
