Covered Deck preparation and Staining/Polyurethan 3 Years, 11 Months ago Karma: 0
I have an old house, approx 50 years old, with a deck at the back which is covered. It doesn't get much sun directly on it. I want it to be polished and very shiney and wondered if I should use say a marine polyurethane. All you guys sound very knowledgable so your help would be appreciated.

Polyurethane and shiny is absolutely the wrong thing to do to outside wood. It will peel and create a maintenance nightmare. I strongly suggest you do not do this. If you are, I would suggest the Messmers TimeberFlex. This is a film forming product that will leave a sheen on the surface of the wood. It will be better suited then a polyurethane.

Thanks for that, I had thought that if it was a Marine type it would stand up to the weather, but I will now look into the Messmers Timberflex type. As I live in Australia this brand may not be available, but I am sure there will be a similar product.
Thanks agin.

Look for a product that is flexible with changes of weather. This will minimize the breaking of the bond between the sealer and the wood which leads to product failure.
