New tight knot cedar deck 2 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 0
Very confused as to what to order, I have a brand new tight knot cedar deck just installed in Happy Valley, Oregon (pretty much Portland, OR).

Did some reading about Penofin, Cabot, Defy as well as many others and still confused. I just want the best for rainwater protection and UV. Heavy traffic area with daily use (front entrance to home and porch area).

Do you have recommedndations on new cedar deck prep. Plan to lightly pressure wash and let dry 2 days in 80+ weather? Application tools?

Want to go with something just a little darker than natural (in the penofin brand Cedar on Cedar or Western Red Cedar).

Please advise the best product for me to order?

Good Questions!

All the products you mentioned are high quality stains. Problem with new cedar is that it is not very absorbent which can cause stains to film on top of the wood. This can cause premature failure. All three will work well. Just make sure to not over applicate. You might want to consider the TimberOil as well. It penetrates better then anything else on new wood.

When cleaning the wood make sure to use a wood cleaner and a wood brightener. They will open the pores of the wood and make your cleaning easier.

Cedar or Honey colors are usually the lightest tints. They will enhance the natural tones slightly while showing the natural grain of the wood.
