Galvanized or stainless steel screws. Neither will rust and fall apart. Is their a black stain aroung the screw head? If so, then you have rust in your wood where the screws are falling apart. You may want to use a deck brightener. This will help remove those stains.

I have the same problem. The builders didn't use protected screws and now that are rusting leaving black drip marks. Did you try the brightener?

Hi I didn't have bad stains around the holes so no no brightener, ok so galvanized it is. It amazes me that contractors used the wrong screws in the first place

It's not like they are more expensive either. Just bought the wrong kind. Maybe it was built by a homeowner who hadn't any idea what they were doing

I had the same issue but not with decking but on other external fixtures, it took a lot of time and effort to make things look again, its got to be laziness as you allude too

On rare ocasions, the screw manufacturer mislable's the box's too. It happened to a deck builder I know and they had to replace about five decks because of it.
