Help with IPE stain 1 Year, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I’m having a new deck built – one that is accessible from the second floor, the other being built at grade. The contractor has finished the framing work, and is now methodically installing the ipe decking – using concealed fasterners. He is carefully cutting each board and using endseal prior to installation.

Although some folks prefer the gray tone that occurs as a result of weathering, we chose ipe for the rich dark red-brown color (and its reputation for longevity).

How do you recommend I treat the finished deck so as to maintain the woods beauty as well as maximize its life ? Please advise whether sanding prior to installing a stain or sealer is required. I have read so many postings on the internet that contain conflicting information –
thank you for your input !

Sanding is not required and actually is a bad idea. It is best to prep the IPE with a wood cleaner and a wood brightener. This will "open" the wood pores for the stain.

IPE is extremely dense. Because of this you will need to apply a stain annually. There isn't a stain made that will last longer when it comes to color retention for IPE.

Some of the popular stains for IPE are:

Defy Stain for Hardwoods in Light Walnut
Messmers UV Plus for Hardwoods

Both can be cleaned and recoated when ever needed.

I am in the process of having an Ipe deck installed on my terrace. I like the current color of the wood and would like to preserve it from turning gray. I was informed that there is n "oil" or "sealer" which I can buy that do such. The deck is still in process of installation and NOW is the best time for applying the product.(whatever it is) The area of the deck is 1,600 sq. ft. The location of the deck is in NYC and subject to snow-rain-etc..I would also like to "stain" a small section to accent the area, in addition to applying the preservative.

Please advise. Thank you.

A clear sealer/stain will not prevent UV graying on IPE. You must have a tint to accomplish this.

The Cabot ATO is our least popular product for IPE. I would look at these products instead:

Messmers UV Plus for Hardwoods
Defy Stain for Hardwoods
Armstrong Clark in Mahogany color
Penofin Exotic Hardwood Stain
