IPE and TWP Stains 2 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello:
I have an IPE deck that was installed 5 years ago. No sealer of any type has been used. I am going to have it professionally cleaned and a TWP oil based sealant applied. Should I use the 100 series or the 200 series on my deck? Is there a specific color you recommend I use to make it look like my IPE decking did 5 years ago? Next year when I need to reapply another coat will I need to strip off the first (I sure hope that isn't the case)? Will I be able to personally reapply next year or will I need a professional to do it?
THANKS so much for your advice. Any other input/tips would be greatly appreciated.

Here is some answers to you questions:

1. IPE is very dense wood. The 200 series has too much solids for IPE. The TWP 100 series would be best.
2. A lot of people choose the TWP Rustic 116 for IPE. It will give that nice rich reddish/brown color
3. Stripping or not stripping has a lot to do with wether the wood is porous enough to except another coat and if the old stain weather evenly. Usually you can just use a wood cleaner and recoat. Every few times you may need to strip as you will buildup the coatings to the point where the new stain will not be able to penetrate.
4. You may want to do the clean/recoats yourself and have a professional come in every few years to strip.

IPE being so dense needs to be stained annually. Do not over apply. Just one light coat every year should be sufficient.

What about the TWP 516? I was told that is the way to go.
