Yes, good point. Cleaning the wood occasionally will remove dirt and grime while keeping the wood looking good. Make sure to us a wood cleaner that will not remove the stain but just clean.

Is it beneficial to use a metal shovel just to peel off snow from a deck? Does it result in erosion? What in the case of a new deck?

I would not use a metal shovel on wood. It could scratch the surface. Plastic would be better.
