Does varnish work for Ipe 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I constructed a deck from Ipe about a year ago and finished it with the Messmers UV Plus. It's held up well, but the homeowner is looking for a brighter and lustorous finish, the way it olooks when it's wet. This is a pool deck exposed to full sunlight. I am concerned about the safety and durability of varnish and was hoping someone might have some suggestions.

Putting a varnish on the IPE would be a terrible idea. The Messmers hardwood stain is our best seller and will give a "wet" look to the wood. The problem lies with the density of the IPE. This will require annual coatings to retain this look. I would suggest an annual coating every spring to revive the color of the wood with the Messmers.

Thanks for your reply. Just for clarification, are you recommending the Messmers Hardwoods? This is what was used originally. It is working well but does not offer the “wet” look that the owner is looking for. We allowed about 10 days to pass prior to application as the owner originally wanted to allow some weathering. If we use this product, should we use the part A cleaner first and then apply the stain? Thanks again.

The Messmers Stain for Hardwood does enhance the natural colors like a "wet" look. It will not leave a "shiny" varnish look though. Putting a shiny varnish look on your deck is a very bad idea.

Yes just apply the Messmers Part A cleaner to prep the wood, let dry, and reapply.
