Messmers Timberflex problem on IPE 3 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 0
I have a IPE wood decked front porch on my home (brazilian Hardwood). The flooring website recommended Messmers for the protection. I went to a local paint store that carries Messmers, and was told the Timberflex product would work for what I needed. I applied the material to the porch last weekend with a brush and the finish looks great. The only problem is that it has been a week now and it is still not completely dry in areas. IPE is extremely dense. In looking at your website it says not to use Timberflex on decking. What do I do now? Will a topcoat of something seal off the surface? I hope that I don't have to strip this material off and start over.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations as I have had my porch blocked off for a week now to keep foot traffic off of it.

Timberflex is not for horizontal surfaces. This is stated on the can. You are going to have numerous problems when putting a film-forming stain such as Timberflex on IPE. It will peel and it will be extremely hard to remove. You cannot top coat as that will only compound your problem. Your local paint store should be aware that they have created a major issue for you. I'm sorry to tell you all this but there is no easy way to fix this without sanding/stripping the porch bare.

The proper product to use is Messmers UV Plus For Hardwoods. This was designed for dense woods such as IPE.
