Penofin Marine Oil 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I am using this product on white oak that I just installed on an outdoor area. I am looking for a protective product that will not change the natural color of the wood. Do you recommend this product? Most of the protective finishes i have found have a slight pigment to them. FYI, the wood is decorative and will not be walked on, but is exposed to the elements.

The Penofin Marine oil does have a slight pigment. It will enhance the natural tones of the wood similar to a wet look. The pigment is needed to absorb the UV rays. If it has no pigment then it will gray very fast.

I have a cedar deck and any stain or preservative that has been applied either clouds up or peels. The deck was power washed, treated with Wolman's deck cleaner, then sanded 2 years ago, the Wolman's stain has peeled to a point where 25% of the deck is bare. The deck is 6' off the ground, but I had a rubber roofing mat installed over the original cedar deck, the ends were flashed, and a new free standing cedar deck was installed over the mat so that the area under the deck is dry for equipment storage. The mat will have some puddling of water after a rain, but most is confined to one area of the deck. The peeling I am experiencing is widespread and not confined to the area where water will accumulate. I do not know if this mat is a factor in the peeling, and the local hardware store has recommended Penofin Marine. Should I consider a marine stain due to the presence of water? or the red label ultra premium. This modification to my deck was done 8 years ago and the deck now is 15 years old. I have tried Sherwin Williams, Wolman's, and Olympic stains - all applied exactly as instructed, and all have failed. Thank you.

I believe a lot of the issues you are having is more or less due to the stains you have been using. They are all mediocre water based stain (except maybe the Olympic). A water based stain typically will not penetrate into the wood as well as an oil will. Penofin stains are well known for its ability to penetrate into the wood. The better a stain penetrates the less prone it will be peeling.

I do not think the failures are the result of the mat. The Penofin Marine Oil would not make a difference.
