TOPIC: Synta Deck Restore?

If you're looking for a deck resurfacing product, use UDF-21 manufactured by Gulf Synthetics. I recently used it on my deck and it's the best deck product i've ever used, very user friendly and forgiving. It actually repairs an old deck that has been damaged by the climate cycle. After rolling two coats of it out just like paint, you get a tough skid-resistant surface somewhat like a line-x truck bed liner. The best part about this product is that there is an endless color palette, because the kit calls for one gallon of any exterior latex paint of your choice. I'm a big fan because it saved me the money i was going to spend on replacing my deck due to its condition, it filled in the cracks and locked down the splinters. The finish is uniform and now my deck looks like composite. I love it

Sounds like a very thick "paint". I would be interested to see how it holds up in a cold climate state. Did you take any pictures?

First of all, thanks for the post. While it is true that I'm now a representative for Gulf Synthetics, I was first a user of UDF-21. Everything that I mentioned in my post was from the standpoint of being a user and I wanted to keep it from becoming a sales pitch. The intent was to keep the post on a personal level and not bring companies into the discussion. This is simply a discussion of one product compared to another. I hope the readers will appreciate the fact that when you're sold on a product, you'd like to share your experience with others. (For the record, there is nobody wanting to strangle the chairman of the UDF-21 product). I love your forum, for it does benefit many by sharing experiences as I mentioned. Have a great day.

We used Deck Restore on one of our smaller decks (250 sq ft) about 2 months age. The appearance of the deck is exactly like the samples that were displayed at the store. You will not see wood grain. It's a matter of what you want. We like the looks of it.

Application of the product was exactly as described in the instructions. Cracks were filled as described (up to 1/4 inch). We did discover that applying in hot sun is not a good idea as the product becomes very thick and is hard to work with. Best time to apply seems to be early morning, evening, or a cloudy day.

All decks (wood, composite, etc.) are too hot to walk on barefoot under the hot sun. Best solution that I have found for this is to wear shoes (dah).

For questions about application, we called Synta and easily got through to someone who was able to answer.

The big question remaining to be answered is how the product will hold up over time. We will wait one year to evaluate. If it still looks good after that amount of time, we will use it on our large decks. I will report the results here at that time.

I, personally, have had very good results with the Deck Restore product. Although there are not many reviews out on the web, I made the decison to try on a small balcony before taking the plunge on a massive deck located on the lower level of our home. Our deck was previously treated with Olympic stain but over the last year the deck had faded, cracked and even splintered in some areas. Overall, the deck did not have any weakness just looked extremely worn.

I have to say that I was amazed at the coverage of the Deck Restore product. We used the product exactly as instructed and even watch a video on the application. Because we wanted a smoother texture, we opted to brush the 2nd coat (for a large deck, this could be time consuming). We chose the Taupe color and only applied Deck Restore to the walking surface and in between the boards. The finished product is wonderful. My deck looks similar to a composite deck without the wood grain. It has baked in the southern sun for months now without fading, peeling or cracking. My neighbors were so suprised at the outcome. I have attached some before and after pictures so you can also see the result.

Finally, Deck Restore is a bit expensive. My balcony is 10X12 and it took two kits to complete at about $50.00 per kit but if it last 5-8 years then I think it is worth the value.
