Stain New Screened Cedar Porch 2 Years ago Karma: 11
You are now in a live chat session with Andy...

Andy (09:51:12): Hi there,
The Sealer Store (09:51:29): Hello how may I help you?
Andy (09:51:33): I have a new screened in porch with Cedar Floor and Ceiling. Need advice on staining and sealing...
Andy (09:51:54): Thinking TWP or perhaps DEFY. Really hard to make sense of all the bogs.
The Sealer Store (09:52:01): Ok. How old?
Andy (09:52:08): Brand New
The Sealer Store (09:52:24): Smooth cedar or rough?
Andy (09:52:42): Good question....let me check
Andy (09:53:17): smooth
Andy (09:53:38): screened on three sides against the house
The Sealer Store (09:53:42): Make sure to clean and brighten the new wood. This will create porosity, ensuring that the stain will absorb better.
Andy (09:53:43): located in St,. Louis, MO
Andy (09:53:59): OK, sounds good...even with brand new wood eh?
The Sealer Store (09:54:11): Defy and TWP are both excellent products.
The Sealer Store (09:54:30): Yes even on new wood. Removes mill glaze
The Sealer Store (09:54:47): Do you prefer oil or water based?
Andy (09:54:51): I have the ceiling boards in a pile and want to treat them before they are put up. Do I need to brighten them also?
Andy (09:55:17): I am not sure. Water seems attractive, but are results equal to oil based?
The Sealer Store (09:55:30): It wouldn't hurt to brighten
The Sealer Store (09:56:11): New wood is not very absorbent. Oil typically penetrates better then water.
The Sealer Store (09:56:27): smaller molecule size
Andy (09:56:29): Interesting!
Andy (09:56:59): SO, I need to brighten and then do TWP.
Andy (09:57:04): Would that be a decent plan?
The Sealer Store (09:57:10): Water is better though for mold/mildew problems though
Andy (09:57:34): Hmmm, what about this DEFY nanotechnology business.
The Sealer Store (09:57:43): Clean, brighten, then TWP would be a good plan.
Andy (09:57:48): In general, If I did DEFY, which is the best defy?
The Sealer Store (09:58:02): Defy Extreme is the best water based stain on the market
The Sealer Store (09:58:25): Penetrates better then any other water based stains.
Andy (09:58:50): OK, for 16*16 floor and slightly vaulted Ceiling of cedar, how much product do I need?
The Sealer Store (09:58:58): It will be available in Natural Pine, Cedar Tone, and Light Walnut in the next couple of weeks.
The Sealer Store (09:59:56): For Defy. I would suggest only 1 coat on the ceiling and verticals. 2 light coats for the horizontals.
The Sealer Store (10:00:14): Applies 150 feet per gallon
Andy (10:01:38): So 16 * 16 * 3 (for 2 coats on floor) is 750ish so sounds like 5 gallons anyway.
The Sealer Store (10:02:26): Yes, maybe a couple of more gallons but at least 5 gallons to start.
Andy (10:03:05): So, the Cedar tone defy is not available yet? this would be a new product?
The Sealer Store (10:03:17): One Defy Cleaner and Defy Brightener will be enough. They are concentrates.
Andy (10:03:45): Ah, OK on the clean and brightener. Thanks
The Sealer Store (10:03:50): Defy Extreme Cedar Tone is now available in gallons only. 5 Gallon Pails in a couple of weeks.
The Sealer Store (10:04:14): Free shipping on the 5 Gallon Pails but not on single gallons
Andy (10:05:15): Wood the fact that this is shield from much direct sunlight, and most rain, be a factor in the decision? Also, the brick patio that it was built over got some green moss growing on it.
Andy (10:06:05): Are lots of people using DEFY? This is one of the hardest products to see talked about on the blogs.
The Sealer Store (10:06:07): Not really. The stain will last longer in the shaded areas.
The Sealer Store (10:06:57): Defy is our top selling product on the Internet. TWP is the top selling product for our walk in business.
The Sealer Store (10:07:20): Probably sold 10,000 gallons of Defy last year
Andy (10:08:12): OK, well then I just need to "man up" and make a decision. I really really appreciate your help!
Andy (10:08:33): Would you use the TWP 100 series?
The Sealer Store (10:08:49): Not a problem, You might want to sign up for our Newsletter
The Sealer Store (10:09:15): This will inform you when the Defy Extreme is available in colors.
The Sealer Store (10:09:28): Also has coupons
Andy (10:09:35): OK, will do!
The Sealer Store (10:09:44): TWP 100 Series is the most popular of the TWP
Andy (10:09:49): Thanks again!! Andy
Andy (10:10:00): Ok on 100.
The Sealer Store (10:10:02): No Problem.
Andy (10:10:24): Should let you go. BYE!
The Sealer Store (10:10:37): Have a good day!
