Messmers UV Plus for HardwoodsMessmers UV Plus for Hardwoods is one of the best selling stains for wood such as IPE, Mahogany, Teak, Massaranduba, Meranti, Pau Lupe, and all Ironwoods. Messmer's Hardwood Stain was formulated to penetrate these extremely dense woods, providing a natural appearance. If you are looking to enhance the beauty of you Hardwood, them Messmers UV Plus should be considered.

There are many types of Hardwoods that are used for exterior decks. Most are from Brazil and are considered part of the Ironwood family. These woods are extremely dense and are naturally prone to preventing rot and decay. The problem lies in the ability to prevent the wood from oxidizing and turning gray from the damaging UV rays. Messmers UV plus was designed to properly penetrate these dense woods while at the same time enhancing the natural color tones. The tint acts as a UV absorber prolonging the natural graying effect. Due to the density of the hardwoods, stains will need to be applied on an annual basis. Messmer's UV plus for Hardwoods is easily cleanable and re-coatable for a maintenance coat whenever needed.

Here is a picture of a IPE deck that has Messmer's UV Plus for Hardwoods in the Red Mahogany color. This picture was taken 22 months after the stain was applied. As you can see the Messmer's held up extremely well for a deck that faces south. Just a little dirty from the trees.

As seen from the photos, it does appear that the UV Plus is of great help to
protect the hardwoods and the servicing area of about 150 - 250 square feet in
smooth wood and 100 - 150 square feet in rough wood is a great money saver.

Should hardwood be always used for exterior decks? What are the advantages of
the hardwood being used for exterior decks?

No, you can use all types of wood for decking. Cedar, Redwood, PTP are very
popular. Hardwoods such as IPE are very durable and stain beautifully.

As outdoor wood decks are exposed with high UV rays of the sun, this product
help to protect the wood decks to a great extent. I read that in sealers it is
the iron oxide pigment which gives UV protection to woods. Out of curiosity to
have some understanding, is it correct?

Yes the trans oxides help to "absorb" the UV. This prolongs the graying
effect.
