What does the future hold for Nano-Technology and Wood Deck Stains or Sealers? How about finally having a "crystal" clear coating that can filter out UV rays for years or a tinted wood stain that can retain color twice as long!
News Alert!: Defy Extreme Deck Stain with Nano-Technology will be released March 2009!
Currently there isn't any "crystal" clear non-tinted sealers that have the ability to filter out the sun's damaging ultra violet rays. To achieve the ability to filter out the sun's UV rays you need pigments such as trans-oxides. Trans-oxides act as a UV absorber, prolonging the natural oxidation/graying of the wood. Nanophase Technologies is an industry-leading nanocrystalline materials innovator and manufacturer with an integrated family of nanomaterial technologies. Nanophase has for several years been among the leading suppliers of UV absorbers based on nanoparticulate zinc oxide. Nano sized zinc oxides when incorporated into exterior stains, filter the high-energy radiation out of sunlight. Because of their tiny size, the zinc oxide remains invisible to the naked eye and so the stain is clear on the wood or deck, unlike traditional deck stains which are tinted. When coupled with other traditional UV absorbers such as trans oxides, the products performance can be doubled in durability. Currently more then one manufacturer for wood and deck restoration products, have new nano-coatings already being tested. These new clear nanotechnology wood sealers have shown tremendous potential. As one rep stated "We are optimistic that there will finally be available a clear solution for wood that works for years. In our accelerated tests, the coating showed zero color change at a one year interval." Another rep stated "the holy grail of deck finishes!"
Coatings manufacturers are just beginining to utilize these nano-particles into their products. With these advantages in Nano-Technology you will see new products in the next year or so, changing the expectations of how long your wood and deck finish will last.
