Scott, since signing up several years ago on several boards - I have 'bought' into the oil/alkyd type decking stains - and one reason is the relative ease of removal when restoring. How do these epoxy/waterbourne finishes hold up compared to their oil cousins. And when they do start to fail - can they be repaired without being blotchy, and most importantly, can they be stripped? What life cycle of maintenance can I expect when servicing customer decks with these products? Or is this for those one-time happy customers that don't want me coming back for service - and I will be back to sand these decks down 7 years later when the new property owners have moved in?

First off this product is not like a traditional "epoxy". It has a small amount of epoxy resin that will harden in the wood once it penetrates. It is not a film former like a garage epoxy paint. That being said this is a water borne product that will penetrate into the wood. It is removable in a couple of years with a deck stripper. Same as any oil based product. The Defy Epoxy Stain product is mainly for pressure treated pine and virtually any vertical surface. If applying to hardwoods or cedar you would need the Defy Stain for Hardwoods. This product was designed for dense and hard to penetrate wood(Your samples left today in 3 colors). Both of these stains can either be coated with a light maintenance coat or stripped whenever needed.

Defy is also coming out with a new Contractor friendly stain. As far as water based stains, this will probably be the best one yet. I believe it is set to launch and we should have it in stock at the beginning of April.

I have been very happy with the Defy Clear Epoxy stain. We wpply an annula coat once a year and it looks good for the season.Very easy to maintain!

Approx 4 weeks ago, I re-sealed my deck with Defy Epoxy Cedar Wood Stain. I applied 2 coats to the horizontal surface. Worked great but when I looked at it the next day, I noticed I missed 3 boards. That is, I applied only 1 coat to those three boards. Guess I got distracted. Any way to get that 2 coat process on those 3 boards without re-stripping the entire deck and starting all over again?

At this point I would just touch up those boards with some stain. Worse case scenario is that you may need to touch up the same boards again next season. That is a lot easier then stripping and starting over again.
