storm_shield_houseAll of this talk about “green,” sustainable, LEED’s compliant, what does it mean, why is it important? Many markets have embraced this concept and are benefiting from the performance of these types of products. Gemini introduced Storm Shield Deck Stain in 2010 and has experienced significant growth in markets where there is demand for these types of products. Truckee, California and the Lake Tahoe area in particular have grown into major markets for this waterborne, environmentally friendly product based on the consumer based demand for green products that are safe for the environment, yet perform, and in many cases outperform, their solvent-based counterparts.

This particular area of the country contains a lot of exterior wood, cedar sided or log structures and the trends are toward semi-transparent and stained surfaces versus painted surfaces. The same product performance features in this waterborne product line:

  • Semi-transparent
  • Resistant to surface oriented mildew growth
  • Color stability
  • Penetrating vs. film forming

…have contributed to Storm Shield® growth in this area of California where an already high performance standard has been set. These year-old projects look like they were stained yesterday. The environmentally and performance conscious consumer has responded favorably to the introduction of this technology and the demand will continue to grow. Recent Storm Shield® test results from Q-Labs in South Florida (attached) indicate that this waterborne technology will perform and based on South Florida being one of the harshest testing environments in the U.S., Storm Shield® will perform even better elsewhere in the U.S. where U.V. exposure is not as prevalent.
